CHEAP FLIGHTS
A few years ago I flew my family to Sweden for a holiday with friends. We paid about £7 each way for our tickets.
That’s ridiculous.
It cost five times more than that for me to take a train to London – and that’s off-peak. Of course the full cost is considerably more than the headline figure. You have to consider transport to and from the airport, airport taxes and paying through the nose for pretty poor food once you’re in transit.
The really terrible thing is that cheap flights mean more flying. The growth in greenhouse gas emissions from flying has more than doubled since 1990 and this meteoric rise is predicted to keep on going. Don’t be fooled into think that cheap flights help the poor – actually they help the middle classes, often for example to fly to second homes in far off places. And if we want to subsidise the poor, there are far more efficient ways of doing it.
At the same time as increasing the cost of flying, we should be decreasing the cost of going by train and bus, making them viable alternatives. It’s not a panacea but at least it might slow the growth or air travel and make it easier for people to choose a more eco-friendly option or reduce the amount they travel – including me!
